Fashion Inspiration: Walt Disney’s The Lion King

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

The Lion King

The Lion King is one of Disney’s most inspiring movies. Praised by critics and loved by our elementary school selves, the film holds the record for the highest-grossing 2D animated film of all time in the United States.

I know you’re probably thinking “Yeah, the Lion King was a cool movie, but none of the characters wear clothes… How can you be inspired by the fashion?” Well, if you think outside the box, the Lion King has endless possibilities for inspiration. I personally think that the songs from the movie are incredible, so I used scenes from different songs to inspire 4 different outfits below.

Like the previous articles in this series, the purpose of this article is to use childhood idols as inspiration for outfits that you can actually pull off as a college student. All it takes is a little creativity!

For more Disney-inspired looks, check out our past articles on Walt Disney’s Snow White, Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, Walt Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Walt Disney’s Cinderella, Walt Disney’s Princess Jasmine, Walt Disney’s Princess Tiana, Walt Disney’s Pocahontas, Belle from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jane Porter from Disney’s Tarzan, Megara from Disney’s Hercules, Emeralda from Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Walt Disney’s Mulan.

About The Lion King

The movie begins with all of the animals of the Pride Lands in Africa flocking to Pride Rock to welcome the newborn lion cub, Simba. Simba is the son of Mufasa, the King, and Sarabi, the Queen. The animals are excited to welcome Simba into the world, because he will be the future King of the Pride Lands. The only animal that isn’t thrilled about Simba’s birth is Mufasa’s brother, Scar. Scar is a selfish lion who wants the kingdom for himself.

As Simba grows older, he is enthusiastic about his future as King. He has a great relationship with his Father, and wants to learn everything from him. Unfortunately, Scar cannot live with the fact that Simba will be King, so he plots to kill both Mufasa and Simba. Just as Scar planned, Simba gets caught in a stampede of wildebeests. When Mufasa tries to save him, he gets trampled in the stampede and dies. Although Simba survives, Scar tricks him into believing Mufasa’s death was his fault, and that the kingdom would hate him for what he’d done. He encourages Simba to run away and never return, so Simba takes Scar’s advice. Scar returns to the Pride Lands and tells all the animals that Simba and Mufasa were both killed, and he takes over as King.

Simba feels terrible for what he has done. He is depressed, not only about his father’s death, but about the fact that he will never get to see his mother or his best friend, Nala, ever again. Eventually, he meets up with an unlikely pair of best friends, Timon, a meercat, and Pumba, a warthog. They take him in as their new best friend and teach him everything about their laid-back way of life.

Years later, Nala wanders into the area where Simba, Timon and Pumba live. She is thrilled to see Simba, and wants him to go back to the Pride Lands and take over as the rightful king. She explains that Scar has been doing a terrible job and the kingdom is starving. Simba is reluctant to return, and Nala gets upset.

Simba finally changes his mind after talking to his father’s spirit in the sky. He returns to the Pride Lands with his new friends, Timon and Pumba, and he defeats the evil Scar. He becomes King and restores the land to the wonderful place it was before Mufasa’s death.

The Circle of Life

Pride Rock in Disney's The Lion King

As the movie begins, the song “The Circle of Life” plays while the animals in the Pride Lands Kingdom gather at Pride Rock to see the presentation of the newborn Simba.  To capture the diversity of the animals coming together in the scene, I used lots of different patterns, textures and colors. I even included a giraffe print bangle, and earrings with a subtle zebra print.

Just Can’t Wait To Be King

Baby Simba with a leaf mane in Disney's The Lion King

Young Simba explains just how much he wants to be the King of the Pride Lands by singing the song “Just Can’t Wait To Be King“.  His youth and excitement are definitely expressed in this song as he dances among the trees and animals. To recreate the scene with clothing, I made an outfit using lots of bright colors and playful pieces. If you’re feeling extra daring, you can wear the dress with pants, but if not, the outfit would still look adorable without the jeans.

Hakuna Matata

Simba with Timon and Pumba in Disney's The Lion King

Timon and Pumba describe their lifestyle with the motto “Hakuna Matata“, which basically means that they are worry-free. They live wherever they want, they do whatever activities they please, and they eat whatever bugs they can find. Their motto inspired me to make a laid-back, earthy outfit which includes an organic cotton dress, an eco-friendly bag, wooden platform heels, and insect earrings (since they are considered a delicacy to the trio).

Can You Feel The Love Tonight?

Adult Simba and Nala in Disney's The Lion King

When Nala and Simba are reunited after years of being apart, they have quite a romantic reunion. To capture the romance, I used a dress that is the same color as Nala with lacy details, as well as a floral clutch, lace tights, and a heart necklace. Finally, I used earrings with a crown to symbolize Simba’s future as the King.

Thoughts?

Are you inspired by The Lion King? Which look is your favorite? Which Disney movies would you be interested in seeing posts about in the future? I want to know what you think, so be sure to leave your thoughts in a comment!

Looks on Campus: Catherine – Brown University

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Looks on Campus - Catherine, our fashionista from Brown University

For many college students, comfortable, flat shoes are practically the uniform on campus. Although they’re not always the most fashion-forward choice, they’re certainly a practical choice for those who have to do lots of walking. So when I saw Catherine strutting around campus in high heels amidst a sea of flats, I had to stop and talk to her about her fierce style.

A college fashionista rocking the latest fashion trends at Brown University

Catherine 101

Name: Catherine

College: Brown University

Class Standing: Senior

Major: Economics

Hobbies/Interests: “Learning languages. I speak Korean, English, Japanese, French and a little bit of Chinese.”

Let’s Talk Fashion

How would you describe your sense of style?
“Since we’re in college, I like to wear cute and comfy clothing, for example, the skort that I’m wearing is really comfortable. I like to wear clothing that other people wouldn’t usually wear, things that are different and unique.”

Where do you like to shop?
“I like to shop everywhere: Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, and Marc Jacobs in the United States.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit?
“Well, I love shorts worn with power-shoulder tops. They’re quite unique and appeal to my sense of style.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their sense of style?
“Try something new, something other people won’t necessarily wear.”

What is our favorite trend right now?
“Skinny jeans! I know they’re older trends but I really like skinny jeans and jeggings.”

Who are your favorite fashion designers?
“Marc Jacobs and Sonia Rykiel.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why?
“I haven’t thought about this but if I had to pick someone it would be Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl; I really like her.”

What is your desert island beauty pick?
“Mascara!”

Elements of Catherine’s Outfit

Skort

skorts

Skorts are the perfect way to mix skirts and shorts together, hence the name. They combine the practicality of a pair of shorts with the femininity of a skirt. This layered one is a perfect neutral blue and as such, can be paired with most outfits. Also, in windy Providence weather, it is a blessing to be able to wear a skirt and not worry about a wardrobe malfunction!

Super High Heels

shoes

It takes a load of confidence and a level of tolerance to wear high heels in college and kudos to Catherine for doing just that! These heels are gorgeous and they add a touch of class to her entire outfit and glamorize an otherwise-simple ensemble. P.S. Notice how her toenails match her skort – it’s all in the details.

Slouchy Bag

bag

The neutral brown bag is both trendy and large enough to accommodate Catherine’s books, without looking too academic or boring. I love the long, thin strap – it keeps your shoulders from being weighed down by your books and gives the bag a trendy look at the same time. Again, the bag’s neutral color means it can be paired with most outfits.

Jewelry

jewelry

Since Catherine kept her outfit fairly simple, it makes sense to compensate for that with jewelry. She piled on multiple small rings and a bracelet to make her outfit more than just “average.” Since since everything else in her outfit is minimal, her many pieces of jewelry don’t overwhelm her attire.

Share Your Thoughts!

What do you think of Catherine’s outfit? Do you think it’s worth the pain to wear high heels in college (even though it makes your outfit that much more glamorous)? Share your thoughts on Brown University’s first Looks on Campus post! I can’t wait to hear from you guys!

Outfits Under $100: Spirited & Stylish for Football Games

Fashion at a college football game

When Saturday hits, packed stadiums at colleges around the country will be roaring with the vivacious cheers of loyal fans. That’s right… Football season is officially upon us! For a stylish college gal, football Saturdays prompt another question besides “Where to tailgate?” and “Will the team win?” —“What should I wear?”

This post offers up some tips on how to dress for football games with school spirit and style, while on a budget. With these pointers and suggestions, you’ll be hard-pressed to find an excuse for looking frumpy when you’re heading to the field.

Kick off the football season in style with our tips:

Tips for What to Wear to College Football Games

* Don’t limit yourself to team gear.
There’s lots of great school-branded clothing out there, but why limit yourself? You can wear your favorite clothes to games if you find them in your college’s colors. This opens up your options to shopping at any store, so instead of spending $20 on a tired “Insert-School-Name-Here” shirt, you can invest the cash in a cute top that you could wear to the game, or to class, or out for the night. Also, open yourself up to more options than t-shirts and jeans — sundresses, camisoles and skirts make for comfy and classy game gear, too.

* Go with the customs of your school, but don’t be a slave to fashion.
While researching this article, I came across a photo of girls tailgating — all of them were wearing heels! While at many schools it’s customary to dress up nicely for games, I would never advise being a slave to fashion. Most sporting events are hard to navigate in heels, so if you’re not comfortable in them, don’t hurt yourself. If you want some height, wedges are a comfortable option.

* Don’t be afraid to express your personal style.
When you’re in a crowd of students dressed in the same colors and rooting for the same team, it can be easy to get lost in the mix. But that doesn’t mean your style needs to get lost in the crowd, too. Combine your favorite accessories, shoes and clothes with school spirit and you’ll be the most stylish girl at the game.

* Can’t find what you want? DIY.
Don’t be afraid to get creative and do-it-yourself if you can’t find a game-worthy dress or top. With just a couple t-shirts and some sewing talent, you could fashion yourself an adorable dress and a fashionable strapless or one-shouldered top (or a couple of t-shirt scarves!). Don’t let the team store limit your style.

* Don’t forget accessories!
No outfit is complete without the right accessories. Find cute fashion jewelry — like plastic bead necklaces or hoop earrings — in your school colors at mall stores like Forever 21, or check out your local team store for face decals and mini pom-poms.

* Look for team gear in updated cuts, flattering fits and cool styles.
No longer are ladies limited to bulky (and boring) tees, sweatshirts and jerseys. Today, you can find new sportswear brands specifically targeted to fashionable female fans. (Check out the outfits below from some of our favorite pieces from these brands!)

* Heat wave? Don’t forget sunnies, sandals and sunscreen!
The football season spans end-of-summer heat to end-of-fall chills. (And some schools are lucky enough to have sunny skies year round!) When it’s hot out, you don’t want to forget sunglasses, sunscreen, and the best summer footwear, sandals.

* Chilly outside? Find cute cold-weather accessories in your team’s colors.
When it turns cold, you want to bundle up so the game isn’t spoiled with shivers and numb hands. I recommend scarves, mittens, and even cute earmuffs in your team colors. As always, you can find these at your team’s store or just buy them in your team colors elsewhere!

Fashion Challenge: Try Over-the-Knee Boots

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Anne Hathaway, Kate Moss, Blake Lively, Lindsay Lohan, and Hayden Panettiere wearing over-the-knee boots

Hot last year and coming back for round two, over-the-knee boots are both hot for fall and tricky to wear – making them perfect for this week’s Fashion Challenge! If you weren’t sure about these boots last year, now is the perfect time to try them out… if you dare!

Ready to rock the challenge? Read on for some tips and inspiration, then read the instructions at the bottom and send us YOUR outfits!

Tips and Tricks for Rocking Over-The-Knee Boots

  • Much like any other trend, consider proportions for the most flattering look. The perfect pair of boots should hit about an inch above your knees. For hip coverage, consider pairing them with a longer top or tunic.
  • Squeamish about showing too much thigh? This trend looks just as chic with jeans, jeggings, or leggings.
  • Want to rock this trend, but low on cash? Try wearing a pair of mid-calf or knee-high boots with a tall pair of socks underneath for a very “model off duty” look!
  • Short girls can rock this trend too. Pint-sized starts such as the Olsen twins, Hayden Panettiere, and Hillary Duff have all been spotted in over-the-knee boots. I’m only 5’2″ so I understand the hesitation. As long as the boot hits the right part of your thigh, it will look just fine! If you’re still nervous, pair your boots with a pair of leggings that match their color– your legs will look miles long!
  • Let the boots be the focus. As with all trends, a little goes a long way.
  • Ready to buy a pair? Look for styles that can be adjusted to last throughout the seasons. After we featured the Chinese Laundry Tripin Boots last season, I rushed out and bought myself a pair. These boots have no heel (perfect for day or night), can be scrunched down to make a shorter slouchy boot, or can be buttoned or unbuttoned for several different looks!

Outfit Inspiration

Outfit #1 – Casual Over-the-Knee Boots Outfit for Class

Over-the-knee boots outfit with jeans and a striped tee

Jeans, Shirt, Boots, Watch

An outfit like this is casual enough for the daytime–perfect for going to class! Pair your trusty skinny jeans with a cozy striped tunic. I absolutely adore these boots–brown suede is right on trend for this season. Finish with a trendy white watch and add your favorite jewelry.

Outfit #2 – Subtle Over-the-Knee Boots Look

Over-the-knee boots outfit including leggings and a tunic

Tunic, Leggings, Boots, Earrings, Bracelet

This outfit is a great way to rock over-the-knee boots if you’re still on the fence about this trend. Pair a tunic with black leggings, and top it off with black suede boots. From far away, it won’t be obvious that you’re wearing over-the-knee boots, so you can test the waters without making a huge statement. Finish off with some edgy jewelry.

Outfit #3 – Daring Over-the-Knee Boots Ensemble

Over-the-knee boots outfit including a dress and accessories

Dress, Boots, Locket, Headband

This is a bold look, but is totally  perfect for any of you foxy CF readers if worn with confidence! Pair this adorable dress with a girly locket and bow headband, then contrast the outfit’s sweetness with a badass pair of boots! High heeled over-the-knee boots aren’t as versatile as flat ones, but it you find a good deal on a pair, be sure to snatch them up!

Outfit #4 – Faux Over-the-Knee Boots

Over-the-knee boots outfit including socks and a cardigan

Boots, Socks, Earrings, Bracelets, Sweater, Romper

If you’re not quite ready to commit to a full on pair of over-the-knee boots, capture the same look by wearing a pair of long socks underneath knee-high boots. One of my friends wore an outfit similar to this out this weekend and I thought she looked so chic! If you’re trying this for the first time, stick with basic, dark colors, like the black boots and socks featured. Throw on a cozy romper and cover your shoulders with a wrap sweater if it’s chilly out! Finish with a stack of bangles and leaf earrings.
