Bag Bargains: Marc by Marc Jacobs goes minimalist chic

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

Usually our coverage of bags priced under a thousand dollars is centered over at PurseBlog Savvy, but sometimes a bag from a “contemporary” designer so far exceeds expectations that it more than earns a spot among the much more expensive bags at regular PurseBlog. The Marc by Marc Jacobs Save the Birds Lenny Day Bag is one such high-achiever.

I’ve owned a not-insignificant number of Marc by Marc Jacobs bags over the past few years and observed a great many of the company’s other bags in person, and this design may top all of them. MbMJ tends to skew young and a bit retro, but this bag has a modern, sleek quality that not only sets it appart from the line’s other offerings, but also makes it potentially appealing to a very wide customer base.

The bag is available in two colors, but I prefer the light tan over the rich chocolate brown because lighter colors tend to better showcase design details and leather variations. MbMJ uses better leather in its bags than the company’s usual prices would often indicate, and the easy droop of the side folds that the luxe leather creates is the main attraction with this design. They provide a bit of texture without interrupting the bag’s functional purpose or making it difficult to carry, and accomplishing both of those things without shooting minimalism in the foot is a difficult task indeed. Not only does the design team at MbMJ pull it off, but they do so at a downright reasonable price. Buy through Saks for $528.

Fashion Week Handbags: Fendi Spring 2011

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Can I get a standing ovation for Fendi? It wasn’t all that many seasons ago that the brand’s accessories department seemed to be in a bit of a post-Spy Bag aesthetic flux. There were too many logos, too many underdeveloped ideas and too little editing. From the looks of it, the brand has come out of its slump in fine form with Fendi Spring 2011, the brand’s third brilliant major accessories collection in a row. Once is a fluke, twice is a coincidence but three times is a trend – get on the Fendi bus.

For spring, Fendi’s runway accessories are all about incorporating color in a classic way. No bag was graced with fewer than two different shades, and almost all of them incorporated the various colors on leathers of different textures. What would have been an unwieldy combination of elements in most designer’s hands was deftly developed by Fendi’s accessories designers, and the shapes were kept clean and traditional in order to offset the bold materials. There is not a bag in this collection that I wouldn’t be proud to add to my closet, and multicolored accessories encourage an inventive, modern way of dressing that more and more women are embracing.

New Choo: The Jimmy Choo Alina

Monday, November 8th, 2010

I practically am having to drag myself away from the 80+ moving boxes to look at my computer. Oh, hello PurseBlog, I have missed you. And you know what else I have missed? Checking out every new bag hitting the online world. You would think after over five years of writing about bags I would be sick of it, but that is not the case.

There wasn’t much new showing up on my favorite website haunts (obviously aside from the fabulous bags going down the runway at Milan Fashion Week right now). But I did find a little gem from Jimmy Choo. And I am liking what I am seeing. The Jimmy Choo Alina is quite simple but somehow drawing me in.

There is something very familiar about this design (a mixture of Alexander Wang and Givenchy maybe?). It is a no fuss bag. The overall look is nothing short of plain, but plain in a way that is not overly boring. And that task is hard to complete. The tote features thick grainy leather and there is a snake skin panel that helps add an eye-catching touch to the front of the bag. A clever addition is an internal pocket that is accessible without opening the bag (which would easily come in handy).

Some may look at this bag and see three B’s: big, black, and bland. But I see beautiful. Everyone needs a great black bag in their wardrobe and this would be a great handbag staple. As shown above, look how amazing it pairs with leopard heels. Buy via Jimmy Choo for $1895.

Fashion Week Handbags: Burberry Prorsum

Friday, November 5th, 2010

The bags of Burbery Fall 2010 are kind of a shame when you consider the brilliant collection from whence they came. Not only are they plain and boring, but they weren’t even close to being the most interesting leather pieces in the show – that honor went to the many heavily-detailed leather jackets and vests that graced the runway.

For all the intricate leather work that clearly went into the jackets, the handbags were shown none of the same attention by Christopher Bailey & Co. In fact, they were arguably the lowest point of a line I really, truly loved in almost every way. I don’t mind purses being used as bright, poppy accents to a larger look, but designers should at least take the time to make the bags special as well. The latticed python seen on a few pieces was an interesting-enough technique, but the simplistic shapes don’t do anything to help the cause. Full pictures, after the jump.
